About Captain Brian Soucy

Capt. Brian Soucy

Retired from the Marine Corps after 22 years, licensed captain since 2005, and fishing Amelia Island's backwaters ever since. I grew up mostly overseas as the son of a career Air Force father, living in the Philippines, Portugal and England before returning to the States in my early teens. One of my first memories of fishing is with my grandfather on a lake at summer camp, catching bluegills. I caught my first redfish on an ultra-light rod with a plastic bobber and a night crawler for bait, and I was hooked for life. These days I run backwater and inshore trips out of Fernandina Beach for redfish, speckled trout, flounder and sheepshead, plus bull redfish, shark and tarpon in season, and red snapper when the federal season opens. I have fished redfish tournaments locally and competed in series across South Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana and North Carolina. We fish from a 2021 Sportsman Tournament 234 with a Yamaha F250, Garmin electronics, dual 10-foot Power Poles and a Minn Kota Terrova trolling motor. Fishing license, rods, reels, tackle, bait and ice are included on every trip.

Frequently asked questions

What's included in the trip?

Fishing licenses, bait, rods, reels, tackle, water and ice are all included in the price of every charter. The captain supplies everything you need to fish, so bring only food and any drinks other than water.

What should I bring?

The boat has limited storage, so bring only what you need. Useful items: your phone, a hat, clothing that protects you from the sun, sunscreen, food, and any drinks other than water. There is a cooler with ice and water on board. We supply everything you need to fish, but you are welcome to bring a favorite rod and the captain will check the rigging.

Do I need a fishing license?

No. A fishing license is included in your charter, so you do not need to buy one.

Are kids welcome?

Kids are genuinely welcome. Children can be impatient and need steady entertainment, and the captain is good with them, keeping them engaged and teaching them along the way. There is also a dedicated two-hour Kids Trip.

Do you clean and bag the catch?

The captain follows the latest Florida DNR rules and will happily filet any fish within those regulations. Fish cleaning is complimentary on all inshore charters.

Do I need fishing experience?

None at all. The captain does the work; you reel in the fish. You will not need to rig lines or bait hooks, and he is happy to give pointers on casting and reeling to beginners, or cast for you if you prefer.

What will we target?

Redfish including bull redfish, speckled trout, flounder, sheepshead, plus shark and tarpon in season and red snapper during the federal season. We fish corks with live shrimp, mud minnows and finger mullet, cut and dead bait, live bait caught on the cast net, and artificial lures.

Where are you located, and where do I park?

3 South Front Street, Dock 4 Slip 9, Fernandina Harbor Marina. There are several parking lots at the city marina.

When is the best time to fish Amelia Island?

We have year-round fishing, though the species we target change with the seasons. Some months are better than others for particular fish. Your captain will help you target what is prevalent at the time of year you are fishing.

What about a bathroom break?

We can take a bathroom break whenever you ask. It might pull us away from the fish for a short time, but we do not want you to be uncomfortable. Inshore charters stay close to a marina or boat ramp and we are happy to stop at either.

What should I do for lunch?

Bring a packed lunch or something to snack on. There is a cooler with ice on board.

What kind of payment do you take?

Cash, credit cards and check. Gift certificates are available, so get in touch for details.

What is your weather policy?

The captain is trained to watch the radar closely and judge whether a trip is safe. If the weather is dangerous your deposit is refunded, and he will do his best to reschedule your charter for a day with better weather.

Cancellation Policy

A $100 deposit reserves the boat for you and you alone. If you need to cancel for any reason, call as soon as possible so another angler can take the slot. Cancel by phone more than 48 hours in advance and your deposit is refunded in full. Cancel 48 hours or less before the charter and the deposit is forfeited. No-shows forfeit the deposit and are charged the full amount of the charter. Weather is different: the captain watches the radar and if a trip is judged unsafe your deposit is refunded, and he will try to reschedule you for a better day.
